    Default My first razor

After watching a Solingen straight razor being made on one of those Science Channel how is it made programs, I decided to make this a new hobby (obsession?).

For my first razor to experiment with, I bought a razor that had been sitting for a long time in a barber shop. It has a chipped scale and some light rust, but I cleaned it up after viewing Lynn's DVD. It is an Edwin Jagger, Sheffield England, thay says fortitudo cum qualitate on one side. I figured for fifty bucks it was a good one to start with. Is it likely to be a pretty good shaver? I read somewhere that his are made by Dovo.

    Hey Tim

Based on your description I can't tell if it will be a good shaver or not, would need to know more about the blade itself and pitcures would be extremly helpfull. At the very least I would suggest sending it out to one of the hone miester on this site unless you actually bought that razor from the old barber that used it and he honed it for you after you bought it. The Edwin Jagger name is a good one though I have heard it mostly for DE's. Its a relitively new company founded it 1988 and from a look at there web site they sell DOVO razors.

Thanks Joe. I can tell it is not sharp enough so I will take your advice and have it professionally honed.

Your face will be eternally grateful for that decision! Sharp is not a word that I use often. The real term I prefer is "shave ready", which has its own context. You will also require a decent strop. If have not already purchased one check to Vendors Corner below. There are at least three that I can name off the top of my head that sell strops for the beginners. They aren't cheap strops made from crappy leather.

Thanks Dan. I got a nice paddle strop from SRD and look forward to using it.

I ended up here after watching that same episode. Just waiting for my razor to come in the mail. Any day now, any day now.

It is amazing how watching something being made can make you want to buy it. I had to buy a cowboy hat after watching them make Stetsons.

Oh boy. We need to talk!! If you haven't already discovered this "hobby" has a very communicable disease known as AD. You will figure that one out after you've purchased your 100th razor, 50th strop, untold numbers of creams and/or soaps, many brushes, several hones, etc...
