Thanked: 1Thinking of Straight Razors...
I started wet shaving with a DE razor 5+ months ago. Since then I learned how to create lather, learned how to prepare my skin for the shave. At this point I accumulated 8 DE razors, found one most favorite one - Edwin Jagger bulbous lined. Bought 6 brushes and found which one works the best for me - New Forrest 2211. I came to a conclusion that I like soaps not creams, prefer creating lather on my face than in a scuttle...
One thing I realized that buying a beginner DE razor Merkur HD didn't work for me, I had to buy a much more expensive razor to truly enjoy my shaving routine.
I must shave with 4 passes, 2 or 3 passes are not enough for me. Though sometimes I would go to work with 2 passes.
By this time my wife is more at peace with me spending so much time in bathroom, God bless her kind heart!
And now I'm thinking of moving into SR territory. I want to avoid Acquisition Disorder. I want to buy things that I will use for years to come. I am not into rotating razors or brushes. But I love to rotate my creams and soaps and aftershaves! So I need your help to pick most suitable SR and a strop for me.
I'm rather a large guy: 6'4", 220 lbs, large hands, coarse beard, sensitive skin, kind heart...
I'm thinking of buying a Dovo 6/8 or 5/8, full hollow or half hollow. Which one is better? According to SRP it should be 6/8, half hollow...
Should I get to stainless steel right away? Or carbon steel is the way to go? I'm realizing that later with some experience I will acquire a second SR, second one will be fancy
Should I buy SRP DVD first and watch it over before committing to a SR?
