+1 on the previous advice. Additionally, are you stretching the skin of your face while shaving? If not, please do. It provides a smoother, taut surface to remove the whiskers of your light beard.
BTW...I have found that a light beard and/or soft whiskers are sometimes a bit trickier to remove than a heavy, coarse beard.
Just my 2 cents...Last edited by jhenry; 11-23-2010 at 01:07 AM.

I wouldn't get discouraged by the lack of smoothness. I know that if I go 2 days w/o shaving that there seems to be more "pull" and I know my blade is sharp.

Thanks all I will experiment some more. Heck no im not discouraged, everything will be good if I can get the razor to glide. Just like everything I venture into I dont expect perfection right away.

As a Rookie my self, I still like the creams a bit better than the soaps.
I find then give a bit more cushion but I must also confess my only soaps are a sample from TSD and a puck of VDH.
The Bigalow cream (mine says made by Proraso on the bottle) from Bath and body works was my first, I find that it like more water than some of my other creams.
In my experiments I do like mantic and add a little water at a time till it looks right, with the Bigalow/Proraso when it looks right I add a little more water.
How long are you building your lather?
When I stared I defiantly tried to build lather to fast.
+1 to light touch and carefully adjusting the angle till you find whats right for your face and lather.
Welcome to the adventure!

I'm also of the mind that if this was your first shave, it is more than likely your technique.
One of the most common mistakes is too high of an angle, mistaking 45 degrees for 30. Try coming in at a flatter angle, say two spine widths off your face.
