    Default Hanging/Paddle Strop

When you paste a strop does it matter if it is a hanging or paddle strop? I was thinking of buying a few of Tony Miller's hanging strop seconds, and using them as my pasted strops. Will the paste still have the desired effect compaired to hanging vs paddle? If I paste a hanging strop should I use it on a flat surface vs using it as designed ...hanging? Thanks again everyone for the help.

abrasive pastes are for paddle strops only. The hanging strop is used just before shaving. Before every shave you shoudl strop the razor with a strop that has no abrasive pastes on it. Some people use a paddle for that or a loom strop or a hanging strop. From what I ahve seen, most people use a hanging strop for that.

You can have a pasted and plain strop in one with Tony's Heirloom Combination paddle. Three sides are pasted, one side is Latigo for daily stropping.

Thanks Trapper. I am on a limited budget and wanted to get a pasted 4 sided paddle from Tony. Then I saw the seconds and was thinking I could save myself a little cash. I got my daily shaving strop (ebay) in the mail yesturday. It is a russian shell leather strop in excellent condition. I am just washing the linen side to clean it up. I hope I can get my ebay special shave ready with just the strop, or I will probably mail it off to Lynn. So far I have done really well. I got a J.A. Hinkel/Solgien 5/8 razor that appears to be pretty sharp ( no rust, nicks, or tarnish), a kingwood silver tipped badger brush, and the russian shell leather strop all off of Ebay for just under $80 with shipping. I am getting closer and closer to my first straight shave.

Since a pasted strop will remove metal you want a flat surface. The hanging strop even when pulled tight still might have a bit of bow to it. This could actually dull your razor. Save your money up for the pasted strop.

While I love my pocket paddle for pastes, I also has a regular two sided paddle with red latigo on it that I have been using as a daily strop while I'm on the move and I have to confess I find it a little more chalenging to use as a pre shave strop than the a hanger. It seems to require extra focus and a gentler touch and more strokes.

If you put abrasive pastes on a hanging strop then it must be layed on a flat suface before using it. Otherwise you will round the edge of the razor. Thats what I do.

    Hope this helps,

I have used both green and red pastes from the back of the leather on my hanging strops and they have worked fine. I have also tried the TI paste on the linen side of a hanging strop and it also worked fine. I like Hand American Flatbed Hones for diamond pastes when I use it as they are 3x8 and are really easy to work with as they fit into a great stand Keith makes. I have a couple paddle strops and a Maestro loom and do not use any pastes with these. Lynn

I have a few antique lom type strops and see them quite often in antique shops. Most are quite small but it looks like the Maestro super-sized his!

I know f a few people using pastes on hanging strops but one does ned to use more care here as a slack strop could round the edge fairly easily. of course so could an unpasted slack strop.

BTW, Lynn. The razors are killer sharp! Thanks.
