Thread: Best Brush for my husband? and yes i've ready the wikis! :D

Hi All!

First off thank you all for the great info I have used to purchase my husband his first straight razor! I got him a dovo special tortoise 5/8 and strop set from SRD (woohoo for free for life honing! thought i also found a local professional to show him how) but now I am wondering what type of brush would be best for him. I would like to go a little classier than the tweezerman and am looking to spend under $50. I am familiar with bristle and badger brushes in an artists capacity ( ie. I know the difference between the stiffness of the two) but have no idea what would be right for his shave!

he has a very coarse beard and rather tough, rarely blemishing skin if that helps at all...would boar be a better fit for him?

I have also gotten him some trufitt & Hill trafalgar cream for his shave. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A Lot of this is personal preference so really your budget will dictate what you get. I would recommend a best badger. You might have to stretch to maybe 60-65 or maybe not depending on the size. You should be able to pick one up in a smaller size for your price. A mid sized one a little more but check around.

For the money I have been very happy with the 2 Franks brushes I bought on Ebay. The Finest with the shorter loft seems to be a good all purpose brush.

You could get a couple of these and stay under $50 easily.

I hear good things about the New Forest and
Vulfix has some inexpensive brushes as well. My first brush was a $25 Vulfix.

Rocky3-I will second the recommendation for the Frank's brush. I bought a silvertip badger for my son for Christmas for my son for about $30 with shipping, and now want one for myself. And he will love the T&H Trafalgar; it's a great classy cream with an awesome scent. What a lucky man he must be!

I notice your point that you want to go classier than the tweezerman, and whilst there are probably more luxurious brushes than the tweezerman, in fact i own one, my tweezerman is my goto brush as it's firmer and gives a better more consistent lather than my others. So please don't rule it out.

One of my favorite brushes is the one I got from Penworks. Your budget would buy any one of the fantastic brushes that are for sale there.

Check over @ Art of Shaving. I picked up one of their badger brushes a number of years ago and it's still serving me well.

Lucky man is he...I'm suggesting a Vulfix Best or Super Badger to be used with the cream. I bought one for myself and then another for my son. We both like them a lot. We went thru Classic Shaving as the vendor. Merry Christmas!!!
