    Default Recommendation for my dad

    Hello,

I am looking into getting my dad a straight razor for Christmas. I do not know anything about them, so I was hoping I could get some recommendations on here! He already has a brush, but said he would need a leather strap and the soap. Can you please recommend some affordable options for me? (I do believe he has used them before.. a long time ago though).

Also, are there any stores that sell straight razors, besides online stores?

    Thanks!

You should check out the classifieds here for a razor or straightrazorsdesigns.com or any of the other advertisers here on the forum. The important thing to remember is to get a "shave ready" razor. As for for finding a store locally that sells razors, if they're still in business, you could try "The Knife Shop" but the razor would probably only be factory sharp, so it would most likely need to be honed, which many members here offer to do for a small fee. You could also try looking in high end tobacco shops as well. Hope this helps
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

No he does not currently use a straight razor... I don't think he's ever regularly used one.
I'll have to check out tobacco shops, thanks!

yup. dovo's are nice, i doubt you'll fine many opinions to the contrary. was my first... of many.

    good luck. nice on ya

oh p.s. if your not aware, getting a nice edge on the razors is not a given. especially when you buy them new. so its good to buy it online, cause a lot of places will hone it for you. which unless your pa knows how to do that, is a good idea

The first post in this thread is well worth a read. Point your Dad in the direction of these forums as part of the gift. Wish I'd found it sooner. Good luck.

Go to Straight Razor designs. Dovo best quality 5/8 or 6/8. Good all round razor.Love mine to death. Sweet shaves all the time. The Dovo special is their signature razor(Dovos) and just a step up in materials i.e imitation tortise shell.Blade is slightly better as well than the best quality.I have both(only two razors I own actually) They have excellent strops as well .
