Stupid question time
What is "Osage Rub" ? ...the Pinaud stuff in the tall green bottle that my barber always has on the counter.
I saw it at the store today when I was buying a stick of hair wax (don't laugh I have a flattop ok )
and while I am at it - what is Hair Tonic used for ? I see that stuff advertised with all the Pinaud products.
Not razor questions I know - but if I don't ask I won't know.Last edited by EnGarde; 06-07-2006 at 02:11 AM.

Your questions may not be THAT stupid. Several people have looked over this stuff without being able to give you an answer (myself included). Hair tonic is probably some sort of a conditioner, but don't take my word on it. I keep my hair nice and short (1-2.5 inches).

Years ago every barber had bottles of hair dressing kind of like hair spray women use stuff like wildroot and leschooles. back in the 1950s or so most men used that stuff in their hair. They used to call it hair dressing or tonic. I'm not sure if thats what the osage is but I would guess it is. You could go out in a hurricane and not have a single hair on your head messed up.

Osage Rub is a true experience.......an aftershave/tonic that keeps on giving <g>. It says "an invigorating rub for head or face". That sirs, is an understatement to say the least. Imagine a blue/green liquid that smells like a cross between Scope and Listerine. It goes on the face cold and feels pretty cool. A few minutes later a tingle sets in which is the least of a dozen or more sensations that on me at least lasts a good 30 minutes. It is hard to describe what this feels like but the best I can come up with is that it is like sex for your face <g>.
Cool stuff, must be tried to be believed, but dont use it too often or you will go blind <g>.

Great description. Especially awakening when used with Proraso! One treatment you missed...at the end of a long, hard, hot day...soak your feet in Osage Rub.

Stupid Question Time
I've been lurking for about a week....Came over from SMF, where I got LOT's
of great info. about DE's, and a developed a bad case of "Shaving Love"...
So bad in fact, I'm now seriously considering moving up to a straight...
Like everyone else here, I wish my beard grew faster!!!
I recognize a few names....Rtaylor, Woodbane, Kyle....Hi Guys!
Anyway, as I'm prone to get long winded, I can add nothing about "Osage Rub",
but did notice EnGarde's mention of having a Flat Top and picking up a stick of wax.
Back in the late 60's I attended a military school where of course a Flat Top was
popular...We used to apply canned shave cream to our hair, and rub it in with an
alum block, then comb and shape hair...In a few minutes, the hair would be stiff, and stay that way all day!!! Plus, we didn't get wax inside our caps, which would
quite waterproof but gross with a few months wax buildup.
When I starting reading about using an alum block for the FACE after shaving,
I thought that was the wierdest thin.....Humm....I wonder if it would make
the hairs stand up to attention for cutting?

Thanked: 369EnGarde, Hair tonic is mainly used to condition and or groom the hair. Some are specifically formulated to treat or control dandruf and flaky scalp. Some are made with or without oils. I use Luck Tiger (now owned by "At Last Naturals") "3 Purpose Hair Tonic." The label says it "grooms the hair...stimulates the scalp...conditions the hair" Thus the "3 Purpose." This is trully old school, traditional stuff. I believe the formulas are unchanged since the 30's. Even the labeling is retro. Lucky Tiger makes about 5 or 6 other types of "tonics" depending on what type of hair you have, whether or not you want full or light control, etc. The 3 purpose tonic works great for me, gives the hair a bit of a sheen and good hold, and I like the scent. No greasy look at all unless you use a lot. I've also tried their "3 Roses" tonic (maybe I have a thing for 3's) which has no oil in it and has a faint rose scent. You can buy them pretty inexpensively through their web site and some other places on the web. Something different than Vitalis and V05. By the way, I do not work for At Last Naturals, in case anyone was wondering, just a big fan.

No shame in using hair products here. I start the day off with a generous helping of Pinaud clear holding pomade and a teaspoon of Wild Root. Some days I reach for the Murray's Superior pomade and Brylcreem and swirl it up into my own version of an old school pompadour. Old school grooming products just seem to go well with straight razor shaving and it's none of that mamby-pamby metro stuff that costs $30 a can and leaves you smelling like a school girl.
