one shave.
A straight needs to be stropped between every shave. I wouldn't recommend a belt unless it was very flat and smooth. A pair of clean cotton jeans could work. You can also try using newspaper, the more heavily inked (think big pictures) the better.
If you are low on cash, check out whippeddog, if you can spare a little more, grab the filly.

Thanked: 1936Yes, works great & feels great as well, especially if you haven't showered before shaving.
Robby, you have to have a strop...period. You don't have to have a top of the line strop, a filly from ruprazor or simular would work fine...did for me.
Forget about honing right now, get the shave right. Nothing wrong with a barber hone right now, but touch-ups is all you should concern yourself with.
In my experience, the more of a hollow of a razor, the more "sound" you get. I don't notice it much since I let hot water trickle in the sink bowl of hot water I am rinsing my blade off. I have also noticed the thicker the lather, the less "sound" I seem to get. I actually use the overflow on purpose & let the soap and whiskers go down the drain that way. Put earplugs in and listen to your shave...talk about interesting .
Keep at it Robby and you will get it as we all did. In a few months you may be sharing your learning experiences with new straight shavers...

Thanked: 0Id like to thank everyone for their input. My third shave was much better. Proper beard prep, going for a steeper angle than 30 degrees and most of all little to no pressure. It was surely too much pressure that was hurting my face. Thanks again! Robby
An extra special thanks to Larry Andro for his generosity and kindness!

Sounds like you're getting great advice! Hang in there! One thing I'd add to beard prep--when I shower, I put conditioner on my beard after washing my face and leave it there for the remainder of my shower. It really seems to help soften up the whiskers. I know this because recently I had to shave without having time to shower or use the conditioner, and OY! the pulling! Not comfortable!
You might also try shaving with cold water, rather than hot. I switched to cold water back in the summer and have found it to be more comfortable, and I get a much closer, smoother shave. Just my 2 cents . . ."If you ever get the pipes in good chune, your troubles have just begun."--Seamus Ennis
