Thread: New Member and New to Straights

Hey guys. I was reading a blog I was linked to through another blog and stumbled upon this article. After talking to him and looking into it more, he told me he used to use one but hasn't in over a decade.

Today I ordered my first straight, and tomorrow I'm going out shopping, hoping to get a Tweezerman brush (website says the local CVS has one) and Van Der Hagen soap (again, website says local Walmart has it) so when I get my blade I can give it a shot. I still need a way to get a strop, but I read somewhere on this forum that a member had temporary success using a leather belt.

My advice is to get an inexpensive strop when you start out. You will probably knick and slice your strop while you are learning to use it. After you get your stropping down splurge for a first rate strop which should last your lifetime. The inexpesive strops will run you about $40. A top notch strop will run you anywhere from $70 - $300.

The difference between a $70 and $300 strop is for bragging rights and showing off. They will both do just fine on your blade. If we did the pepsi challenge with razors between these two strops nobody would be able to tell the difference on the edges. So if money is tight get the $70 strop. If you want to go crazy get the $300 strop.

FYI I have both strops but use my $70 strop 90% of the time because I am afraid of slicing my expensive one.

The ruprazor filly is probably as good a strop you can get for the price.
