Wet dog! LOL! I forget which of my brushes it was that had a bad smell at first but, I sucked it up for a few days and the smell went away. I don't think you will hurt it if you wan't to try a shampoo or soap on it. I wouldn't use any detergents or chemicals though. The smell could be the handle material or glue and not the bristles. Who knows?
