I prefer balsa with chromium oxide. But, many surfaces are used satisfactorily.

Balsa is actually my least favorite media for pastes. I find it rigid. My next least preferable material is leather unless scrub leather. Most of the cottons and webbing out there work well with pastes so long as it is used sparingly and little to no pressure is used when stropping with it. Less strokes are better as well in my opinion.

I have stayed away from the powders for years simply because the stuff is so messy..........

    Have fun,

    Lynn

Thanks Lynn that's very informative. Now one last question: I have gone over the wiki notes and I'm trying to determine when do you use the chromium paste? At what stage in the honing process is the chromium used? After the 4/8k Norton or before? I know it is 0.5 microns but what grit does that correspond to?

Thanks again for all the great info guys.

I normally do 10 X strokes with no pressure on CrOx to refresh a razor that is starting to pull a little. This is followed by 50-60 on a regular leather strop. If I am using it for honing, then I would do 10 X strokes after my finishing stone. If you only have up to 8K, you might try 15 X strokes with minimal to no pressure after the 8K, strop and test. The CrOx .5 micron is approx 30K.

    Have fun,

    Lynn

I must have been lucky when i bought my chrome oxide, from a seller of pigments and pottery items, on ebay as it works just as well as the official stuff from a dedicated razor website plus i got a lifetimes supply, many times over i would think, for less than £5.00.
I too find that a light coating on leather works much better, for me, than on balsa or hard felt
