    Default Newbie here

Hello all I am brand new to straight razors, I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I picked this up today at a local thrift store for about 8 bucks. The box says Sheffield, the blade says peerless on it, and I believe its a plastic handle. I included a few pics here. My question is: Is this razor salvageable (pretty dull in its current state) or should I aim for something newer and spend a little more money? (sorry for the gigantic pictures)

Hone it up or have someone hone it and learn to use it. You can always get one that is in a little better condition, but this one should be a good shaver for you.

    Have fun,

That razor is well regarded here and looks to be in decent shape for its age. The first thing you want to do is to clean it up as much as you desire and then, as Lynn suggests, send it out for a professional honing. Then you will know what sharp really is.

Thanks for the replies, these forums are unbelievably helpful! Looks like its time to get it honed by a pro and start shaving.

Getting it honed by a professional is a good idea. Once you feel comfortable, you should try honing it yourself, it's really fun! I'm relatively new at honing, and I enjoy lapping and honing very much. No rush though.

Like I said, no rush. When you do have the money and if you're still interested in honing, give it a try.

That one looks like it'll be a good shaver once its honed up. Congrats and welcome to SRP

Thanks again guys. Im certainly in no rush to begin honing. I have read a lot on here about honing and it seems like the best idea is to definitely wait until you have the money to buy the proper equipment. Cant wait to get shaving!
