    Default Scuttle?

What exactly is a scuttle? I've seen the new ones some other members have been posting and they seem to get great reviews so I was considering trying one.

How do they work exactly? They always seem to look so different from one another. Is it just a hot water surrounded soap dish to keep later warm or is there something else to it?

Lastly, where can I look at a few different varieties? I've seen some on SRD but haven't noticed them anywhere else.

    Thanks!

There are two basic types of scuttles. While there are countless designs, they all work in one of two ways.

    a. The modern scuttle. SRD scuttle, dirtybird, Moss, etc. These are double walled lathering bowls. Fill the chamber up with hot water, and it will keep your brush an lather warm while you do your thing. These are generally more popular with creme users rather than soap users.

    b. Vintage/traditional scuttle. These are two stacked chambers rather than a double-walled bowl. The upper chamber does not touch the water. Instead, it has drain holes in in that allow excess water to drain into the lower chamber. The spouts on these are also larger typically, which allows you to dip your brush into the water inside. They do 'slightly' warm the soap, but not enough to make a meaningful difference. They are a throw-back to a time when not everyone had running hot water. You boil up water at the stove, fill the lower chamber, drop your puck of soap in the upper chamber, and you've got everything you need in one handy spot. These do not work at all for creme because of the drain holes, and typically you face-lather when using one.

It's a bowl within a cup. I use it to soak my brush then to keepo the brush warm. You fill the outside jacket with hot water then fill the "cup" with the same. After 10-15 minutes (while you shower) you empty both then fill the outer vessel with hot water again. I mix my lather in a bowl then p-lace the brush in the scuttle for warming. With a soap scuttle you use it for mixing up your lather from soap. the excess water drains into the vessel below.
