yes, one more thing - aim for comfort not closeness. if your razor is sharp a single wtg pass will be quite presentable even if it may not be the closest shave ever. closeness will come as your technique improves over the next months.
your face will be very thankful too.
This is great advice! I started straight shaving in December and only did WTG passes on my cheeks at first, then cheek/neck, then cheek/neck/upper & lower lip. Luckily I have a goatee that I have been growing for 3 + years so I don't have to bother with my chin because I can foresee problems there. I have yet to do ATG, and only do XTG where necessary, until I get a solid technique down. My first couple shaves were BRUTAL due to an ebay razor and no honing experience. I visited a hand full of sites including coticule.be to read up on honing on a coticule and took advantage of a their free honing offer. When I got my razor back the difference was night and day in my results!!! My best HHT to date is a 4. I'm not there yet but I'm learning, and tweaking my technique every shave. I don't shave every day so I'm still a ways off. I think If you stick with it you will get there, and I'm hopping that I will also. Also something that helped me was making a map of my beard growth so I know witch way is witch (WTG, XTG, ATG) while my face is lathered.

Wishing you the best of luck,
    Louis.
