Thread: What works with a Dovo?

yesterday I received my Dovo best qual 6/8 that I ordered from SRD. Now I need to find a strop for it- Does anyone have suggestions for what brand of strop would be a good beginners choice?

I probably would have ordered one of the strop/razor combo deals at SRD.

I can only recommend strops I have personally used.

BTW, When you look at reviews, also look at the reviewer.

People can get a little over zealous when they first start acquiring equipment or when they get a free sample to review....

I still have a couple of filly's...

I got the SRD paddle strop with the interchangeable surfaces and did it for a number of reasons. I have a shortage of space to hang s strop and use it. I like the fact the surfaces are reasonably priced and replaceable if you damage one and the different surfaces allow you to use pastes or diamond spray on it and this helps keep the razor sharp longer and for finishing after honing later on. I think its a good deal for the money.

SRD ....No Brainer. Illinois is also a good strop and has been around for a good long time. Ask Don or Lynn questions and they will guide you well. They got good soaps too !

I bought a Dovo recently from SRD and also got the 3" black latigo strop. I like it because it is wide enough that I don't have to use the "x" pattern, rather I can go straight up and down (it's also pleasant looking). So far after about 30 uses the blade is still cutting away quite nicely (and I am new to stropping). So, I would recommend that strop.

+1 on that....I should've mentioned ,I have the English Bridle Leather strop and love it. It all depends on what kind of draw you like .Mick R also make Kangaroo leather strops that I hear are quite nice.All the vendors here will treat you right that is for sure.

I have the Illinois No. 127 and No. 827, and love both. These have been around a long time and were used by many barbers. They come at 2.5" inches wide, so you'll probably need to use the X-pattern of stropping with them. These are relatively inexpensive. I use them for my 5/8" razors.

My SRD Premium I and English Bridal are both 3" strops, and gorgeous. I use them for the 6/8" razors. Much has been said about them, all good, and I'll go along with that. They are quality in every respect.

My fifth strop is a 2" horsehide and canvas strop with a string attachment to hang from door knobs in hotels. It is made by Tony Miller. This is for travel, and perfect in every way. I use my 4/8" razors when traveling. The razors go in my roll-up wet pack and the strop in my suitcase. The travel razors and the strop are a perfect match.

You can't go wrong by starting your straight razor experience with any of these model strops.
