Default Virgin from Orange County, California

First off I want to say thank you for this website. I have been snooping for a while here and thought I should join the rest of you. I am totally new to straight shaving I have three shaves under my belt. Picked up an old straight at an antique store and got it honed by a guy named Russ at Plaza Cutlery at South Coast Plaza. He also hooked me up with a brush and a strop. I read some of the reviews on the shaving creams and I figured I'd give the body shop's maca root shaving cream a try and I have no complaints so far. Looking forward to getting to know everyone on here and learning from all the experienced shavers, as I do not know anyone who shaves with a straight. Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of this community!

    Welcome to SRP!

I used to run a security shift at South Coast Plaza about a decade ago before the wife decided to move us all up to Fresno. The folks at Plaza Cutlery know their stuff so you should be in good hands. I've been told that he hones his razors up to an 8k Norton, so you're good to go

Thank you all. The razor I got has markings on one side saying blue steel made in germany and the other side says G G Thomas Ottumwa,IA.

Ive been reading about how to get a mirror shine on my blade but im a little confused on what can and cant be removed should and shouldnt be removed and the steps necessary. When I first got the blade back in december I read somewhere online (not here) that I should boil it in water with a little vinegar to make it shiny. Well that only made it worse now I am not sure if I can fix it. Any advice would be nice. Thanks in advance!

I know I will get poo-poo'd for saying this, but I would blunt that spike if ou are new to str8 shaving....Spikes can put you in the hurt locker if you aren't used to them. If you mute the point it will make for a better shave learning curve.

Welcome aboard! I wouldn't do much with that razor for restore, if you like the hone job and are satisfied I would save my money for a second razor, then a third, then a.......well you get the idea. Look at the classifieds here on SRP there are some excellent deals. Good luck!
