Thread: Glycerine

Jut tried a few shaves with glycerine I bought at walmart. I best shave so far.

what is the name of the glycren product? is it like soap?

It's where I got mine as well, it's in a clear plastic bottle about 3.5" tall and 2" around. In the pharmacy section of my store by the skin care/burn care/bandaids/babypowder isle.

glycerine is a fun ingredient to play with in lather.. i have stopped using it all together.. i guess i just got tired of it..

anyway.. i think it's important to remember that glycerin can be irritating when used in large doses.. keep it down to a few drops.. 3 to 5 is all you really need.

glycerine is a pain. I have a 16oz bottle with 15.9 oz left over. Get some from a friend. I am going to measure mine off and give it away.

Victor, can you provide any links or experience on the glycerin reaction. I've caught wind of it on here before but never really got anything nailed down.


I've been using it for a few weeks now (I shave, on average, every 2nd day) without problems. Is it a razorburn-esque reaction, does it provide an sugar-source for bacteria, do you wake up without a nose?

In all seriousness I'd like to know more about it so if a problem does develop I can nip-it-the-bud.

it can provide a dried out burning sensation.. i don't have pictures.. but from what i understand... glycerin attracts water.. and too much glycerin will start to pull moisture out of your skin..

however. using glycerin in moderation is great.. 2 drops and my wee scot loaded with soap really whips up a great lather.

Some people (including me) just have a negative reaction to glycerin on their skin

I found this out when I tried a 25% solution of glycerin as a pre-shave.

I looked like a beetroot

I cannot use products that have significant glycerin content (shave creams, some AS balms etc).

Use of glycerin is definitely a YMMV thing !

It's in my pharmacy section too. I just use 2-3 drops and it does fine, adds a good bit of lubrication and softens the skin up nicely.

I abandoned the idea of adding glycerine to soaps/creams after just one or two shaves due to breakouts. It tends to clog pores pretty easily and can be a chore to rinse completely. If you like the way it performs for you, I would definitley recommend either a complete face wash after your shave (before AS products), or a liberal application of witch hazel directly after your initial rinse to avoid irritation.

As with everything, YMMV...
