    Default Fresh blood

    Hey all,

I'm Hubsche1, and I'm new to straight razor shaving. Picked up a set from Vintage Blades to start off (though I realize now that I could have saved some money.) Got a Dovo Best Quality 6/8 as a starter, and it's been quite an adventure.

I've stepped from a disposable blade razor to a straight, so I can use all the practice I can get. I'm discovering that proper stropping technique is a real must, along with a huge amount of patience. Even though I'm still learning, I've become addicted to the routine of it- the slow, steady preparation is exceptionally calming.

Anyway, I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm not quite 30 years old, and live in the Boston, Massachusetts area. Straight razor shaving is my newest hobby, but I'm also an avid climber and camper. I started checking this site out about a week ago, and can see that everyone on here- from beginners to experts- are very kind, helpful people. I hope I can fit in well, too.

And welcome indeed! There's lots to learn, and you'll find it all here along with some very helpful people. Just don't try climbing whilst shaving!

Welcome to the forums! I never knew that shaving could be something that I'd look forward to, but I now count the days until my next shave because it's such a fun learning experience!

I look forward to hearing all about your journey as time goes on! Stropping is something that you'll find gets easier. It's a knack, and once you get the proper motion down, it's not so bad.

Welcome to the group. Glad to see that you've jumped in with both feet. This ain't no place for quitters. It's a good thing you're young, because there's an awful lot that can be learned here and you'll find the other forum members are extremely gracious to us beginners.

    Yes! To the calming part.

I have always prided myself as being cool under fire. Along with many of you, I have lived thru my share of emergency projects and catastrophes. (A visitor to our house running thru a plate glass door. Accidents. House burned in 1994. And, the usual work projects that have to happen now to save mankind.) And, thru them all, I have been a good soldier.

Unfortunately, as I get older - 58 now - I find it increasingly difficult to relax. I have to think intelligently about my mental health, where before my adrenalin was limitless.

Using straights are very therapeutic for me. Even though I no longer fear the blade, I go slow and take my time. It's great!
