Thanked: 2An off key set of scales.
Greetings to all,
I recently inherited several straigt razors and have thuss become something of a convert. amongst the collection (if 6 razors can count as a collection) there was this monstrocity. I had thought initially of removing and possibly burning the offending items so as to avoid them assulting the retinas of any other creature on this earth. However after spending some hours cleaning and pollishing and honeing and then finaly shaving with this peice I have somehow grown quite fond of its garrishness. It does raise some speculation as to what my grandfather (a man I regard highly for his down to earth phillosophy and no nonsense working class roots) was like as a younger man to have purchased this "funky" styled razor and to have kept it for all those years.
I hope some of you out there find at least a little amusment in this, I certanly have and now smile whenever I pick it up and hope that someday (assuming I have any) my gradchildren will gaze upon this questionably fassioned item with the same perplexity I have been and treasure it for that reason as I do.
Cheerio.
(the pictures do not do this justice)

Welcome to SRP & all I can say is "Psychedelic" man !

Man! I just love it! Some of those were called "end of day" as they took all the colors and mixed them. This one is quite different, though. What kind of blade is it? Razor history, for sure.
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

I think I prefer to not let my mind wander in the direction of what your grandfather may have been, or thinking...
But you can safely assume he was much more complex individual, than his 'down to earth phillosophy and no nonsense working class roots' may otherwise lead you to believe

Thanked: 2The box I found this razor in had a Solingen made in Germany blade that was badly damaged in it along with the complete razor in the pictures. Given that the pivot appears to actuall be a nail that has been cut off and hammered flat on one side and just filed down slightly on the head I suspect that it was a Solingen razor the scales of which were shanghied onto a T.R Cadman & sons Sheffield. Eng. Bengall. Being Australian all this fraction of inch stuff confuses the hell out of me. I can say that it's a full hollow grind and 19 mill wide, what 19 mill tranlates to in imperial measurment........ dunno.

If I recall correctly, those scales are actually pretty darn rare, and celluloid collectors drool over them. Can't say they fit my idea of pretty, but Grandpa definitely left you something unique! That makes for a pretty cool heirloom-- enjoy it!

I love the clown barf celluloid.
I have a few similar, and they are thinner than other scales, with square edges. As if cut from a flat sheet without much attention to much more finishing. Do these seem like that too?

edit to add an image
figured I ought to add an image too. The bottom one is the one I mentioned looks like yours. I have another pair, not on a razor, in the workshop with cell rot that is still fun to hang onto. It has more brown and yellow than this one.
The top one is a Checker Wedge. I think this is the one that BigJim noted in his following post (I added this after I read his comment)

Thanked: 198for some reason i look at those scales and i think, I SAW JERRY MOVE MAN, I SAW JERRY MOVE. but in all honesty, i love them, if they come off in the end, send them to me, im sure i can find a razor to put them on, it would probably be one of the hightlights of my collection.
