Dovo Advice for a newbie
Hi guys, I would just like to start by saying thank you for all the great info on this site. what a great community!
So I have recently purchased a DOVO Straight Razor with Stainless Steel Blade 5/8", Olivewood Scales.
I have been doing my ordering www.fendrihan.com, just curious what strop/hone has worked best for others with this set up? also if there are others that use this site what would you recommend off it specifically? as I would like to contiune using this site. I would like to get a good set up right off the bat, money isnt too much of an issue as I want to order the best once. Any reccomdations that pair well with dovo metal?
Once again thanks guys, I had my first shave the other day ! it was great, edge wasnt the best which led me to post this, but none the less it was great. Thanks for the help guys glad to be part of straightrazorplace.

Good looking razor. I have a Dovo Best Quality that I bought as a first razor and have been very satisfied with. Also a Dovo Special that I just ordered that I can't wait to get here.
I noticed that the website you ordered from doesn't pre hone the razor you ordered. Seeing as how you said your edge isn't great, you might want to think about sending it or taking it somewhere to get it honed up before you use it again. But that's just a Newb's opinion. I know both my razors were honed after the factory hone before they sent them to me. Just a thought.
I can't give you too much advice for a strop though. Best of luck and wish you more good shaves!

Thanked: 4942I would recommend a 3 inch strop to start out. As for hones, I use Norton, Naniwa, Shapton and a bunch of natural hones on Stainless blades daily for honing and any of these should work well for you. Like shaving, honing is a learned art, so don't expect perfection out of the gates. A lot of material that is very helpful here in the forums.
All the best,
Lynn

Thanks alot guys, much appreiated. I ended up with a locally bought illinois strop, lucky for me I was able to track down a local barber that still does shaves, which I assure you is hard to come by in my town. So on friday I get a shave and a lesson in strop/hone. very excited, I will let you guys know how it turns out. he seemed very pleased that someone was showing interest. Once again thanks guys

Very cool. A friend of mine is trying to find a barber around here that does straight shaves for her husband to try, but she's having a rough time. Thats cool you found someone.

I definitely wish you luck friend, as with any skill I imagine learning in person will prove to be valuable time spent. it definitely took alot of digging ! but so far i have loved where this path of shaving has taken me.

Same to you. Honestly I didn't think I would like using a straight razor as much as I do.
I'm a sucker for a stamped tail. Giggity.
