    Default new to forum

Hello everybody new to this forum, and looking for some guidance. I just ordered this beginer package from amazon:Amazon.com: 300 Derby Professional Single Edge Razor Blades & 1 "Shaving Factory" Razor: Health & Personal Care

Wondering if it was a good buy, I bought it so I can edge my hairline myself and plus to SHAVE. I get razor bumps on my neck all the time and I thought maybe someone can tell me a technique of how to eliminate them. Also can I use any shaving cream like regular Gillette? I know I am a new to this so sorry about stupid question but I am curious.

Thanks Guys looking forward to this forum

Welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't help you with your purchase, no experience here. I will try to answer your other questions though. First and foremost, the canned shaving creams/gels are pretty horrible to be quite honest. Once you have taken the time to do a thorough and proper facial prep before shaving, you will wonder why you waited so long to try it. A truly good, comfortable, and smooth shave is 100% dependent on it. Also, good beard prep, good shaving technique, and good after shave treatment are the only things that will solve your shaving bump issues.

Take a look at the other sections on the forum and the WIKI for advice from the more experienced members. Also, check out the video section for info and tips on beard prep, shaving technique, and after shave treatments.

    Good luck

Not sure where you are located but there is a members map that shows members that might be close to you or possibly a meet you could attend. Notice under my name it says google map, just click my location it will show you where I am. Please add yourself. If you are anywhere near milwaukee WI there is a meet in Kenosha This Saturday. PM me if you are close. I can't say much for your purchase but Adam is right about the canned foam. A lather from soap or a cream is much better And also good face prep. Welcome to the forums!

What type of cream and aftershave do you recommend?

If you're looking for easy, inexpensive near instant gratification, run out to your local Rite-Aid and grab a tube of The Real Shave Co. cream or to a Bath & Body works and pick up some C.O. Bigelow cream and some aftershave of your choice (Brut, AquaVelva, Jovan Musk, Old Spice, and Pinaud Clubman can be found almost anywhere). Don't forget an alum block or a styptic pencil for the inevitable nicks. A brush is helpful but both of those creams will work without one, albeit not as well as with one. The Van Der Hagan brush can be found a lot of places and it's a starting point. I'm not a fan of it, but for about $5 it's useful enough. If you have a barber supply shop near you look for an Omega. They almost all run for less than $15 and after the initial use where they smell like wet dog, they work wonderfully.

I can't speak to the Derby blades or that holder but I started with and still use a Shavette from time to time and enjoy it. If you end up not liking those blades too well then check your local walmart for Wilkinson Sword blades or pretty much any where for some Personna blades (they often get re branded to the store brand).

    Welcome,

Like you, I started out with a shavette. Finally bought a razor from Straight Razor Designs. After my first shave with a real straight razor, I never looked back. The razor came shave ready and was much smoother that the shavette. I loved it and and now am hooked on straight razors.

Straight Razor Designs sold me a set which consisted of a professionally honed razor and a strop. I highly recommend that wherever you purchase your first razor you have it professionally honed by the seller or find someone in your area that can do it. It makes all the difference in the world.

    Good luck,

    Johan
