Thanked: 0Two Shaves In...
So I have just done my second straight razor shave. I bought all of my equipment from SRD the other day and am following the advice given on this site, which is to only shave a little bit with the straight to get the feel for it. Yesterday's shave (shave #1) was just awful. There was lots of discomfort and it didn't seem like much was cut off. I was disappointed, but still determined to make this work. This morning's shave was better. I think the problem yesterday was applying too much pressure and not enough prep. There was still some discomfort and I'm not really sure what my next steps should be. Here is the process I followed:
1. Showered
2. Stropped - 10 laps on fabric, then 50 laps on leather.
3. Followed the prep advice here:YouTube - "The Best Pre Shave Routine" and Shaving With a Feather Black Safety Razor, Brush, Cream, and Mug
4. Made my lather in a bowl according to advice here:YouTube - How To Build And Apply Traditional Shaving Lather
About the lather, I'm using a soap, and despite my best efforts, I am not able to get the thick lather shown in the video. I started with a mostly wet brush and added a little water along the way which helped, but I didn't want to put too much water in.
5. Shaved just the right side of my face. Did sideburns down and the cheek area. Today was much better than yesterday, but there was still some pulling and discomfort. I think my first shave was too much pressure. Also, today I tried different angles and was surprised at the difference it makes.
So I would be interested in any advice you have. Do I need to stop more? I bought the razor from SRD, so I assume that it is not a problem.
Thank you!!
Matt
