Old Dog, new tricks etc...
well like all of you guys new to this , i must say I am new also, alot of posts does not signify experience...
However I am hooked and i love shaving, and all related things, maybe too much,(so the better half says)...
Anyways I digress, my father asked me for a razor so as he could shave my apelike youngest brothers neck after using clippers, so I gave him a rockwell razor, sharpened up to aleast cut that hair, and I bought a cheap strop so as he could at least keep it maintained...the plot thickens...so he was set and I also gave him a barber hone i picked up just incase, i explained all the stuff i felt i needed to being the fact that he knows more than me about somethings....
I visited with him last week and found that he had been using it himself and he said ' son, that razor doesnt shave very well ' prior to this I had peeked in his shed window and spotted one of these sharpening stones that you pick up for a few pounds...he decided he could make it sharper and better.....yeah right, yup he'd tried...so I did what anyone would have done and did it as best I could to improve it with my gear....
Today he visited me and was delighted with himself, he'd used it again and it really shaved him well, he loved it!!! (As well as a razor of that calibre can) And then I explained what the difference in the hones were and what I had done to acheive this.
So have I converted him?
Well he cant use them at sea but when he is home, i think so...so I may need to get him something decent even though he says he wouldnt use it in the first place...lol....so my statement is..
Who says you cant teach an old dog new tricks...lol

I got mine to give relatively OK shaves but nothing close to the Taylor or even my new acquisition -- "The Winner". It was a bit worse than a DE shave. I kept it around for experimentation but eventually got rid of it.

Heel!
If he likes it already, I say 'lend' him a razor you'd be proud of if he wanted to keep it. If not, it'll only come back home. If it stays with him, then you have converted him and yes, you can teach that old dog a new trick.

Old Dog New Tricks
well all i can say is that I think sharpening the rockwell was more luck than good judgement....so Bill it worked...lol...
I intend to get him something decent but not to go nuts as he accepts all things that are free, being scottish he is an expert at this...
So the question is this...what do i get the old man as a razor, it will need to be quite stiff and a reasonable size at least 7/8th,6/8th at a minimum and of course something I would use....hmmm
I guess I will wait till i get home and give it to him for his birthday and then he can please himself, and not hurt my feelings...lol
ok I need to get to norway to go back offshore so I will see you all in a few days time ...cheers boys, simon

Simon,
I'm willing to bet that your father will becomes
just as addicted to straight razors as the rest
of us.
Who knows, within 6 months he just might
rival has son in the use of a straight.
Take care
Terry
