    Talking Hello

Hi my name is kenny. I live in the UK near a little town called Liverpool. I have been using a dovo straight razor and I'am really pleased with the straight razor experience compared to the safety razors I have been used to. I purchased my razor from a specialist shop as shave ready, the problem I have at the moment is trying to keep it shave sharp.I have a hanging strop made by dovo and a paddle strop by thiers-issard which I use but I just can't seem to keep the blade as sharp as when I first used it. I can still use the razor to shave with but it is starting to drag and is not as comfortable as it first was. If anybody has any tips or advise on what the usual pitfalls are and could point me in the right direction I would be eternally grateful. Many thanks.

Hello, and welcome to this new yet old process.

Likely the razor is still sharp, but technique needs practice. These forums have great resources including the wikis.

It is possible you may have rounded the edge of the blade with improper technique. You can try a pasted strop(again wikis are good to learn that) or send out for rehoning.

If stropping did round the edge, remember keep the spine of the razor on the strop, with the blade flat on the strop as you swipe it.

Hi Im actually a newbie too, I have only started str8 razor about 6 months ago, Dovo was also my first shave ready razor. After a few months of shaving, my Dovo need a touch up.
I assume your razor is in good shape & only need a touch up. what I do I followed all the insruction from SRP wiki & SRP members and it really work. If you do about 50 laps of strop on your hanging strop & doesnt work, 1. you can either get a chromium oxide(cheaper way). It explain "how to use chrom.oxid" on SRP wiki.
    2. or you can get 4000/8000grits honing stone (quite expensive about US $90)
    3. or get a barber hone (inexpensive but I dont think they make this anymore, but you can get from SRP classified or Ebay).

you can just follow all the instruction on SRP wiki and some videos on SRP or youtube.
I dont know if you've heard this, DOVO suggest to rest the razor for 24 - 48 hours after shaving. bcos they say the fine fin sharp edge kinda bend after shaving and its extremely slow for the edge fin to straighten up. So You may need to get one more razor.

    GOOD LUCK Ken

    Peace Out

    Welcome and hello from Hastings

This video tutorial by our hi_bud_gl is the best stropping video I have seen for hanging strops:

    YouTube - straight razor stropping

AFDavies videos on paddle strops are excellent too :

    YouTube - MrAfdavis's Channel

Have fun & good luck !

Thanks to all for the information, I think my stropping needs a bit more work. I think the promblem is I'am using too much pressure on the razor when stropping. I find it's quite difficult to keep the blade perfectly flat when using little to no pressure when stropping.Hopefully I will get better at it with a bit more practice. Again thanks to everyone for taking the time to help me. kind regards Kenny.

Indeed, seeing it helped tons. Thx!!

I obviously need more work on the stropping as well. I just cut mine this week.. I have it pretty patched up now, but it scared the crud outta me.

I'll work on this technique tonite.

    Hello Kenny and welcome aboard.

Before you next use your strop (DOVO Hanger) try laying it on a table and rubbing it with the palm of your hand about 100 times or until it warms up slightly, This should increase the draw of the leather and also make stropping with less pressure easier.

    Good luck
