Thanks for the info guys. Everyone seems to be real helpful and nice on here. I have another question. I noticed that the size of a straight is classified by its width in 1/8" increments. I have read that the benefit of a smaller width would be the ability to get into tighter spots such as the mustache. And that a wider blade is beneficial in that it can hold more lather before having to be rinsed. I would also think that the angle between that face and the blade is easier to see with a wider blade and therefore probably easier for a newby, correct me if I'm wrong. So my question is, what would be a good compromise between a smaller and a wider width?

I would say a 6/8. But that is my opinion.
    I own razors in 3 sizes - 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8.
    I have a mustache, so I can't give any
advise on shaving under the nose.

Excluding the area under the nose, I couldn't
honestly recommend one size over the other.
If the razor is SHAVE READY, it will do the job.

    Hope this helps,

I'll second that. Another benefit of those sizes is they seem to be good for learning how to strop, which is an important skill to get right since you'll need to do it properly before each shave. After that you can explore different razor sizes to see what you prefer.

I'd go for 6/8 as it's right in the middle of the general shaving spectrum. I started with a 6/8, but now my shaving rotation has a 50/50 split between 5/8 and 6/8.

As for Colleen's stuff, don't get it! It's so good that you'll never be able to get enough! I started off by testing her samples, then I bought a couple of soaps form her.. Now I just placed an order for 3 more (1 is a spare of a soap that I already have in the rotation) and a cologne. I'm HOOKED

    edit: list update lol
