Thanked: 48Adding DE to the repertoire...
I recently purchase an edwin jagger DE to add to the game alongside my growing straight razor collection. Am thinking to use it for small cleanup of places I have trouble with using the straight or for travels when it would be easier to take it with me. I have never used a DE and would appreciate any words of wisdom. Is it a WTG only type thing or is it good at ATG? Are there certain scenarios where it is preferred to a straight? Better for a rushed shave out the door sort of thing on those one off days?

A DE is just another tool in the shaving arsenal.
Some use it exclusively, some when they are rushed and some simply as a change and enjoy using it. Like anything else you must learn to use it and there are techniques you need to master. You also need to experiment with the different blades out there to find the right blade razor combination to match you personal requirements. Pre shave prep is the same as for a straight. Depending on your skin and the razor and blades you may or may not want to use all the usual strokes.
Come on over to the DE forum and you'll find the guys very helpful at setting you straight. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Recnetly took the plunge to DEs myself. I really like them and already acquired 3 59 Fatboys, a 60 Fatboy, a 57 SS (birthyear) and an un-opened 71 SS. I also have two Schick Injectors. Whew, glad I have avoided RAD. I use them during the week, as I can shave a little faster with them. Won't be getting rid of my straights though. But they do offer a nice break from a straight.

You can make any stroke you want with a DE, but like with straights you do the more difficult strokes with some risk unless you use NO PRESSURE. Just let the weight of the razor do the work. I'm on vacation now and left my straights and my DEs behind. When I'm in a rush or don't want to put in the time for a quality shave experience, I head right for my Fusion Pro Glide.

Thanked: 48I was wondering what to do with my fusion and the half dozen cartridges i still have for it. sounds like it is good for weekends away. maybe the DE for longer trips and just for a change of perspective from the straight at home.

My daily routine is:
WTG & XTG with a straight
ATG with a Edwin Jagger DE89L or a Gillette Fatboy
I enjoy using both a straight and a DE everyday.
It's your face so you can do what you want. LOL

I still have a fusion around. I actually donated it and all of my blades to my wife.
As far as a DE, I use it for touch ups when I am not happy with my straight shave. I also keep it in my rotation and use it every third shave or so. I love DE shaves just as much as straight shaves.

Hello, groovyd:
I alternate between my straight and my double razors. Each offers its own pleasure. These days my mornings are filled with activities and, therefore, I use the double edge during the week and the straight on the weekend. I suppose I could get up a bit earlier to have time for the straight razor, but I already am up at 5 a.m. So yes, I do love the straight and the double edge equally.
Some important thoughts:
1. The double edge demands respect as much as the straight and cannot be rushed. Go with your natural pace.
2. I do one pass with the grain and two across the grain in different directions. I might do a little bit against the grain on the neck directly south of the chin. Otherwise I don't need against the grain. I suggest to avoid against the grain.
3. The preparation is the same as that for the straight.
4. For the Edwin Jagger, I use Feather, Gillette 7 'O Clock "sharp edge" in the yellow packets, Personna "Reds packs," Super Iridium, and occasionally Derby. All are good blades for one of today's silkiest razors.
Regards,
Obie
