I have a 4k/8k norton whetstone. When honing I notice a black substance appear on the hone. What is this and should I be concerned?

Thanked: 2591That is metal abraded by the stone.
You should not be concerned but you need to make sure the surface is cleaned ona regular basis, and also lapped for optimal performance.Stefan

The black substance is a good sign, means your stone is working by removing steel from the edge of your razor.

Thanked: 2591sand paper on flat surface is cheapest, but long term you could use DMT 325.
No slurry is needed IME.Stefan

If you choose to use slurry with your norton you could also use the same DMT as Stefan recommended for lapping.
