    Yes, lay the shaft flat. The plate is very rough before it is used. You notice a significant change in smoothness when it is broken in.

    BTW, if you do have a problem with the DMT, be prepared for a long wait. They claim "the best warranty" on the box, but I have found it to be deplorable. I had a defective plate and sent it back to DMT rather than get a refund/replacement from the vendor. They received it in May and I have yet to recieve the replacement. I've called their "customer service" and could not believe the answers I was getting. From "it is sitting here, we haven't had a chance to look at it" to "we are in short supply of plates and are sending them to vendors first rather than replace warranty items". Sheesh!
