Faulty D8C?
Hey there, just got a D8C and tried to lap my naniwa and I did a couple of circles, lifted up the plate and it had left a massive score on the naniwa!
after inspecting the plate closely I found two tiny bits sticking out, about 0.10-0.20 of a mm. Would this be covered under warranty? and will I be able to send it back?
thanks guys
Alex

It is recommended to take a plane blade or something like it, wet the plate, couple drops of dish soap, rub it down well. I didn't have a plane blade so I used the shaft of a long, heavy , screwdriver. They call this breaking the plate in. Make sure you go over the edges of the diamond side too to get rid of any divots.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

So would I take the screwdriver and scrape it up and down the plate like I would a straight razor?

Thanked: 1195Some back and forth strokes will do just fine. You just want to knock down those high spots, and like Jimmy said don't forget to do the edges as well.

Yes, lay the shaft flat. The plate is very rough before it is used. You notice a significant change in smoothness when it is broken in.
BTW, if you do have a problem with the DMT, be prepared for a long wait. They claim "the best warranty" on the box, but I have found it to be deplorable. I had a defective plate and sent it back to DMT rather than get a refund/replacement from the vendor. They received it in May and I have yet to recieve the replacement. I've called their "customer service" and could not believe the answers I was getting. From "it is sitting here, we haven't had a chance to look at it" to "we are in short supply of plates and are sending them to vendors first rather than replace warranty items". Sheesh!Last edited by WBK; 07-23-2011 at 04:41 PM.

Hmmm... that sounds frightening, I think I'll try and smooth it out before using the warranty. Thanks for the help guys

I've got a feeling this is gonna take a while to knock this little bit off, at least two hours and even then I don't know. does anyone know how long it usually takes to get rid of these little bumps in the plate?
thanks Alex

that little shink of light you see there is the bump, like a little wart. they are quite small but enough to scratch my naniwa The next picture is in the exact same position as this one except I used the loupe on it - just to give you a sense of scale.
and the other bump which is smaller...
hope I've got all the pics and descriptions right... I've never had a D8C before so don't know about any of this stuff. I know its supposed to be flat... that's it
more pics:
tried to get it a bit clearer.
