I saved a lot of complexity when I stopped doing "passes" and just lathered up and shaved. I add a little water when needed. since the best second pass is water only, there is really no reason to add "passes". I simply keep shaving. Technically, it's one pass, but the shave continues until I'm done. Relathering is time consuming and doesn't actually contribute to a better shave.
