Thanks to all of you for the great information. I am the ultimate noob. I have always loved those few times I have had a barber shave and have decided to take the straight razor plunge.
I am 51 and have been using electrics for about 20 years. My beard has just become too wirey for them to be effective. It also seems that the hair growth is in every direction on my neck and my guess it that a straight will help me with that. The last blade I used was a Trac II and have never tried these mega bladed razors, nor have I wanted to try them. Now you guys say this is an addictive hobby. Oh well, cigars are the same thing for me too. I will just tell my wife that a man needs hobbies.Last edited by Iceman; 10-10-2006 at 04:15 AM.

Welcome Iceman. I am 66 and also have a tough wiry growth that goes every which way on my throat and edge of jaw. You will need a very sharp razor and persistance in perfecting your shaving technique and preparation. I recommend a 5/8 or 6/8 round point also. Spend money on the hones and strop, then on more razors. The Norton 4/8K is the best for a start. From there it is a matter of preference or familiarity of what works on up in the ways to finish the edge. I like the Coticule followed by a Shapton Pro series 15K.

Thanked: 9I have 16 razors 1 month after I started. Several soaps, AS, creams and other stuff, as well. 2 new brushes (I had 2 others from my DE days before I converted)
Here's the best part: all this after I started a thread arguing that I don't need many razors... Oh the shame

OK... Now I am getting scared... I thought cigars could be an addictive and expensive habit. Well, actually its just the buying of cigars that is addictive, not the smoking of them.
All kidding aside, thank you guys for the welcome. It looks like a fun group here. I ordered the DVD that Lynn sells and have been invited by Alan for a lesson, so I think that should take a lot of time off my learning curve.

That's a great start right there, Iceman. I often make the mistake of trying to reinvent the wheel and end up learning things the hard way half the time. You've made a couple of wise choices instead.
