Thanked: 1Newbie Barber
Hey Guys,
I just found this site a couple days ago. I am about to finish barber school within the next 3 months. I have a background in telecommunications. My job just went to Mexico, and I didn't want to relocate to south Texas. I chose to start barber school last summer. I am in the process of purchasing my equipment for the shop. I learned too use a straight razor a few quarters back. I was using the disposable blade type. I wanted the real deal. So I purchased a DEVO this past Sat. can't wait to shave my first client. I have browsed around this site and it looks to be a good place to learn from many pros and collectors. I am a knife collector, looks like my safe may have a few razors in it, in the future. Thanks Melman

Thanked: 1I don't have any problem with Texas. I don't want to travel to Mexico everyday. You know about all the turmoil down there.

It took me a little while, about 4 years before I felt really adept with a straight. I would be patient with your learning curve. You'll see lots of people struggling with things like irritation. as you can imagine a pro barber should be waaaaaaaay past that point before shaving customers.

As a barber myself, my advice to you is to wait before using a traditional straight on customers.
Believe it or not there are many differences between traditional and disposable straights. You need to learn what "sharp" really is with a traditional SR and how to maintain that edge once it is achieved. It's one thing to give yourself a lousy shave but clients are a different ball game.
Read as much as you can here at SRP, all the dirty work has been done for you and everybody here is willing to answer any questions you may have true razor profiency takes time.
I have no doubt in my mind that you are skilled with a razor, in fact just knowing that you visit this site shows passion and commitment.
Congratulations on your new career and if there is anything you shall ever need my PM box is always open to you.

Detryot knows of what he speaks. We have lots of members that have found shaving easy, but shaving someone professionally is a skill with few practitioners.

Congratulations. I hope you have a great career as a barber.
If you will come to Texas, I will volunteer to be your first paying customer for a straight razor shave. We haven't lost that pioneer spirit.

Thanked: 1Thanks guys for all the positive replies. I didn't take any offense from Homer Jay. I have many guys that are in my shooting squad that really know how to insult. My skin is pretty thick. My best friend now lives in McAllen Tex. He said it was 108 down there the last few weeks. That makes the GA weather cool 98, here lately. DLB I found some GOOD BBQ in south Tex.
