Thanked: 0Badger Brushes
I am currently using a standard badger brush from The Art of Shaving. It works well but I want to updgrade to a pure or silvertip. I really want a brush that is soft and holds a lot of water. I'm looking for something in the price range of about $50 -$100. What are the best brands to consider? If it helps, I like using AOS cream rather than soap.

Start HERE. This should give you some good basic information. The best value brush I own is a Crabtree & Evelyn (made by Edwin Jagger) Best Badger brush. $35 bucks. It is cheap, but a very well built brush. It is also a brush you can learn from with minimum investment. This brush will allow you to learn if you want more loft (taller bristles), softer or "scratchier" bristles, a larger or smaller knot, etc. And should you buy it and decide you don't want it as an everyday brush...it makes a great travel brush. The SR-208, availabe from Charles at www.qedusa.com is also another brush to look at. $59 bucks, a silvertip, but you may find it a bit floppy. My favorite brushes come from Bernd at www.shavemac.com. Lots of variety available, plus you can have a brush custom built. Finally, take a look at the Simpson Persian Jar 2 at www.leesrazors.com. Ignore the pricing on the website and call him. Tell him that you are a member of SRP. You'll go a little over budget, but you'll have an incredible brush!

I would only add that you could contact shavethebadger on the forum and get a custom brush. I have two of his in silvertip and they are the perfect combination of ideal qualities with just a slightest touch of scratchyness to them. Vulfix are very nice also, very soft, almost too soft for me.

Thanked: 0I suggest a Vulfix 2233. I've got the 2234 and the 2233 is identical, only the handle is slightly smaller. In effect, the brush is slightly cheaper. I doubt you'll be dissapointed with it. I use mine with both cream and soap and I have no problems what so ever.

I'll avoid plugging my store here, but I agree that the Vulfix brushes are the way to go. Even Corey Greenberg, "Mr. ShavBlog.Com" himself agrees.
The 2234 is our most popular seller, with the 2235 number two. I like the the 2233, but personally found it too small and elected not to stock it. We carry them in Super Badger exclusively, since the Silvertip costs more, adds no appreciable benefit to the shaving process, and is, in fact, not as soft as Super Badger.
I'm sure this ought to generate some discussion.

I recommend calling one of the businesses and discussing your preferences with them. I spoke at length with Lee @ Lee's Razors and he gave me an outstanding deal on a Chubby #3. I have been using the brush the last few days since receiving it and couldn't be happier. As mentioned, let him know you are a member of SRP or one of the other boards, and he will take care of you.
