I am getting good results with my Thuringer from Manufactum in Germany, they ship to other countries. At 18 euros a good bargain IMHO.

The new Bengall makes my shavette look like a kids toy!

I have just bought a real cheapo razor off ebay for a quid to practice honing on.

P.S. I used to live up in Chesterfield (Gladstone Road by the football club). But am a Nottingham lad originally.

Bloody Hell Rob, How bizzarre is that ?, up until last year I was living on Gladstone Road (10), have moved just around the corner now (Malvern Road), by the Tennis Club.
Unbelievable really, you go onto a forum about a by and large forgotten piece of social history, with a membership mainly from North America with a smaller amount from the other corners of the globe, and end up liaising with someone who lived on the same street! Just how wierd is that ?

Its a good Idea to use that cheapo to get a feel for what your doing, It would be a shame to overcook that Bengal.

Go easy on the honing and don't press on hard to shave, you should only need to rest against the the face and let the razor do the work, technique is all, If you feel you have to press on then its not sharp enough and you'll cut yourself.

The members here are fantastic and most will go out of their way to help (eg. Alexander who started this thread) there is also an awful lot of good advice if you want to use the search function. It certainly helped me.

Nice talking Rob, and keep at it. (always pleased to help).

    Speak again

    P.S. Forest or County ?

    How bizare indeed!

I only lived there (no.23) for a few months with the girlfriend while I moved house. Her parents still live there though. I actually met an old mate from school on a floating island in Peru one day too. Its weird how these things happen.

Forest of course! I reckon we are going up this season and about time too. The 4-0 against Chesterfield was certainly a confidence boost! The new ground in Chesterfield is certainly overdue as well. I remember sitting on the timber benches there just two years ago and the whole place felt like it was going to collapse (or burn down).

I am waiting for my stones and strop to come through the post. Can't wait to get going on them but will practice on my £1 razor (I kid you not!) first.

Incidentally, I have just tried the hanging hair test and thumb nail test on my new razor and it appears to be sharper than the brand new blade I have just placed in my shavette. None of them passed the hanging hair test though.

I gather with the honing you just let the weight of the razor do the work and you don't need to press on other than to ensure the whole blade is in contact with the stone?

If the edge is REALLY dull, you need to apply a bit of pressure. If you are just doing a regular honing, then just use enough to keep the razor in full flat contact with the hone.

Well gents I live in Rugby/England. I have been shaving with a straight for about 5 year. I am not really a collector just like to shave with a St8.

I can get an shaveable edge but I am no expert. But if I can help out I will.

They must have lost money on that deal as they now want 18 Euro to ship to me in Maryland !

I should have very similar Thuringens available here in the USA in early October. As well as a few other new razor stones.
