Thanked: 0First Shave
Well today was the day.
Hot shower
Preshave oil
Unscented SRD shave soap
Junk badger brush
Dovo 5/8
SRD 3" latigo strop 50 strokes
Results: 0 nicks, not the smoothest shave (but no XTG or ATG)
I went only with the grain on this shave. Getting to all the spots was a little awkward for hand positions, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
I am very happy that I made the switch. Now I can't wait for the stubble to grow back in for the next shave!!!

Well your first shave was clearly much smoother than mine!

Thanked: 0Sounds like you had a better run of it than I did a few days ago with mine. I haven't had any real cuts yet, just a couple nicks. There's definitely a learning curve involved.

Thanked: 0This is a first. I didn't really need a shave this morning!!! The Str8 gives a much closer shave (but we all knew that). The chin is proving to be the most troublesome area. I think i may stick to shaving the flats until I get more proficient. I can either use the old multi-blade or grow a goatee!!

Thanked: 0Charles, a DE is a great idea! I have been trying to avoid a debilitating case of RAD, but alas it may be inevitable.

Thanked: 275You can find a perfectly good Gillette DE in a typical antique shop (or flea market) for anywhere from $5 to $20. You don't have to hone it, you don't have to coat it in oil, you don't have to strop it. And you don't _necessarily_ get RAD for DE razors, just because you have it for straights.
I started with 1 DE, and I now have 3 (and a Schick injector), so it may be creeping up on me.
