Is buying a older Illinois Razor Strop Co. strop made of horse hide($35) a good idea?
I'm a noob.. this strop appeals to me but I don't know anything about them yet.
An older Illinois Razor Strop Co. strop made of horse hide – they stuff they were originally made of. Old-New Stock (says 95% new(toted around)) for $35.
Sounds good to me, but comments would be a good idea.

Can you provide link? I have an Illinois 361 and am very happy with the performance.

Thanked: 324I've got a couple of the older Illinois strops and they're outstanding. They're the only strops I use today and I've had a BUNCH of strops including some new Illinois strops. I'd say to go for it. Where did you find them?

If the Illinois strops are flat and smooth they should be fine. Unless they are very old I would question the Horsehide part. The Horsehead logo on most strops (mine included) is a hold over from tradition when all strops were made from Horsehide. Some older Illinois actually said 'Genuine Horsehide" and those really are, everything else, probably cowhide.
I owned a #361 myself and did really like it.
