I have been cold water shaving now for well over a year and have no inclination to return to hot but .... when I did shave with hot water I used a scuttle. I favor the Moss scuttle which can be had from Sara Bonnyman Ceramics. I think it is the best one because it was designed to do nothing but keep lather hot. Those that were designed to keep the lather hot and to use as a lather bowl compromise the two purposes it seems to me.
Anyway, after you generate your lather, take your lather bowl and insert it in another bowl filled with hot water. If you want to gild the Lilly insert the pair in the sink with hot water surrounding them. That will serve as a 'poor man's scuttle' until you decide whether you want to go for the expense of a dedicated scuttle.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 48I have a couple weissshwartzklosswhatever scuttles (a smaller classic which is pretty nice and an xl which takes up your entire bathroom) i have replaced with a moss if you are interested in one. i like the moss because it holds the heat in better but it is harder to lather inside because it is a bit small. i would love a moss that is say one inch wider at the top but the same diameter at the bottom so i don't hit my brush on the sides all the time. it would be really sweet if the inner bowl of the moss was an aluminum dish that snapped in to really transfer the heat of the water.
with the moss one way i have settled on to making a decent lather is to squeeze out the brush once or twice during the process of whipping it up. a little messy but it helps make the lather really explode and you end up with a more consistent lather all without requiring any glycerine which I have found disrupts the natural quality of a good soap or cream. i got a few tubes of glycerine I could throw in with the scuttle if you would like, pm me.
i would still love to see a scuttle that either had a rechargeable base or plug-in which heats the lather on demand either by heating the water like one of those instant water heaters for tea or heating the bowl directly and therefore not even requiring the water in the base. perhaps something like this...
Allied Precision 1 Qt. Heated Bowl Stainless
