    Default dilucot success

After wrestling with my NOS Dubl Duck Goldedge for a couple of weeks, I re-re-re-re-read the dilucot method, put it through the paces and finally got a very smooth shave! My first honing success after lots of work and coaxing the razor and hone. I just can't seem to get the HHT, though.

I have been sharpening knives, etc all my life and have been very good at it, but these razors are a different kind of beast.

    First congrats on your success.
Second HHT does not give any indication on how the razor shave, many razors do not pass HHT and still shave great.
I would suggest for now to learn how to get best of your stone the first time you set to hone a razor, then worry about calibrating HHT to mean anything(you will see you will not needed by then).

tonight I honed my old Crown and Sword with the dilucot and didn't have the success I had with the Dubl duck yesterday. I think the C&S must be a bit harder steel and will require a bit more effort.

You are correct episaacs, knives and razors are very different beasts.
Please lose the HHT from your testing regime - it really proves nothing unless you know what you are looking for and how a specific hair reacts to a specific blade.
FWIW I use the thumbnail test at the bevel stting stage, the arm hair test at the 8k stage and the shave test at the finishing stage.
I tried the thumbpad test and bled for hours so I don't think I got it right....hehehe
Out of the 9 or so razors on my rotation, I have only done the HHT on one and that was a 4/8 wedge - just to see if it would do it - the hair just jumped off.
I used my wifes hair which is extemely fine since it grew back (chemo) and the blade was well oiled.
Apparently it should not have worked with an oiled blade but, such are the variables with this 'test'.
I would suggest that you get on to You Tube and have a look at gssixguns honing videos - they are worth their weight in gold IMHO. (how much does a You Tube video weigh?.....mmmmmm)
    I hope this helps.

Congrats! Cotis are wonderful...I love mine And as others have said, don't worry about the HHT, it'll frustrate you more than anything, just the shave test is good enough for me
