Hello and welcome! There's a section labeled "beginners", which I believe is directly or almost directly above the icon for "post new thread". I would say it answers just about any question a beginner might have. There's a ton of information on this website, as you pointed out. I'm really pretty new myself, but can tell you just about every question I had was answered through the icons below the SRP logo on the main page. As for honing, and everything else in life, you can do it yourself if you want to learn how. If you don't have the time, or don't want to mess with it, there's a member services icon which will give you information on members of the SRP community that will hone your blade for you.

Another thing to think about is: If you someone else chooses your soap and strop, then what's the point of having choices? But they do have a shave of the day, where someone talks a little about what they used each day to shave with. I think you're probably gonna have to just buy one and try it out. If you don't like it, get something else next time. It's a matter of personal preference. If it's made for straight shaving, then it's gonna do the job. I got a little sample of Col. Conks Bay Rum and I really liked it. But I also got some Mitchells wool fat, and it's working just fine too. When it runs out, I'll probably get whatever's at CVS. As for the strop, I'd suggest spending the money to get a nice wide one. It just shortens the learning curve if your leather is the same width as your blade is long. I'm by no means an expert, but I hope I helped a little. Welcome again! I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do!

PS: On the right top side of the main page is a google search box. Type in some keywords, and it'll take you to threads related to your question so you can see what experts recommended to others. Yep..looks like the experts already beat me...and had better answers too. haha

My biggest suggestion to you is to find someone as close to you as possible using the member map, posting here and/or placing in your personal info. While meets are regular they are usualy no more than once or twice a year per area. The individual meet up makes a huge difference in a beginner's journey.
