Default well its all moving on..

well, i'm now 5 shaves in, three with my original blade (royal crown razor) and 2 with my Ford and Medley. i have some trumpers sandlewood cream and i used it the other day, its nice stuff. i've since orderd sample packs from trumpers and T&H (a bit back to front i know!)

however on the last use of the original blade i felt it scratching a bit. on closer inspection, a nick. i've now flatened the edge and re-beveled at 400g. 600, 1000, then the micron grades to come. i think that after i get a good 1000g finish i'l strop it to get rid of any burr that might have formed, i need to be carefull of the over honing issue, but obviously i need to get a good polished edge too.

    its all a learning experience.

    cheers all

    Hello, Steve,
That nick could have resulted from from a bit of a roll while stropping. It would not be a bad idea to review your stropping, as well. Either way, stay with it.

    Steve,
Please tell me you aren't shaving off of an edge that is "finished" on 1000 grit sandpaper. If you are, please stop. Learning to hone and shave should be done separately. Where do you live? If you are here in the USA, I'll hone your razor for you properly as long as you will cover the return shipping. A properly honed razor will sure make the shaving learning experience a LOT more enjoyable.

But why not learn to do everything at once? What's the worst that can happen when you dive in head first?

    Oh yeah... a broken neck...

Hi Scott, no mate, there isn't a snowballs that i'd shave off 1000g. i did a little strop just to make sure that there wasn't a wire/burr. its currently at 8 micron. tomorrow i'll get started with 3micron and then finally 1micron. all nice and gentle. i already used it this way with no problem. what i believe was the issue was rust in the edge (its old and not been looked after) which made itsself known during the first sharpening/ shaving and stropping rounds.

i have a nice Ford and Medley that i am using in between times. thank you for the kind offer of honing my razor, the level of friendlyness on here is great.

oh, and i'm in the uk (there are ppl here who'll hone for a fee) sheffield in fact.

cheers for the offer of help

Thank goodness. I've heard some guys have been successful at honing on films & paper, I have no experience in this area & can't comment...sorry. Stones (at least the one's I've used) I know...

Hi scott, i'm glad for your concern, but i have to say that the lapping film is good stuff. i float it onto an optical flat, working in a physics dept, there are plenty of them knocking about. most likely i'll use lynn's pyramid method with the 3 and 1 mic films.

    all the best

well i finally got round to using the re-sharpened razor, and i have to admit that i was crossing everything that i had to cross. thankfully it was a nice and comfy shave. a bit patchy true, and i'm still not comfortable going ATG that much. but its all a learning experience. i'm getting better at it which is the important thing. i get no or very little of the dreaded burn and dispite haveing the occasional i could just get the M3 out i haven't given in yet. in fact i feel its about time i lobbed it in the bin.

the amount of knowlege here and the willingness to share that knowlege is excellent. i look forward to spending some time here.

another little update, still having fun, last shave was with the ford and medley, i used T&H rose cream, 1805 ASB. not bad at all. but that was sunday and no shave since then, my little one is teething so finding time to get a nice shave in is hard, and i now refuse to use the M3 on principle which means i can get a bit stubbly!!

    oh well back to work

    steve
