All good advice thus far, but as an alternative to soap, maybe you should try a cream. Creams tend to lather much easier. I suggest this because I have hard water and it's more of an exercise in frustration trying to lather the soap. I made the switch to creams and it seems as if my problem was solved.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Try using cream instead of the soap.

I've used a brush and mug for over 30 years and have had no problems with lathering. But several months ago I decided that I was just tired of the extra time and mess (not much time and mess, but just extra) and started using canned shave cream (Barbasol, CVS house brand, etc.) Regardless of what anyone says about quality, environment, skin health, etc... the stuff just works and I'm perfectly happy with it.

    Something to consider. YMMV

With scolding hot water, I can load up in 10 seconds, it seems to lather better as well. Of course by the time you put it on your face, its cooled down a bit

thank you to everyone for your posts, especially blix. I loaded my brush for about 25 seconds and my shave was a dream compared to my recent shaves. Thanks a lot.

+1 to all advice here but let me add: if you are going to buy anything extra to what you've already got, try distilled water FIRST, because if that DOESN'T help, then at least you don't have something useless sitting around. distilled water is great for use in your iron if you tend to iron your shirts/pants, or you can just drink it. if you were to buy glycerin first, and it turned out you didn't get anything from it, you'd have a useless bottle of glycerin lying around. not that there's nothing you can do with it, but chances are that you weren't going to want it for anything anyway. at least with water you always have a use for it.
