Thanked: 0Hello From Lafayette, LA.
Hello everyone. I've thought about this for some time and decided to try it out. I am familiar with blades, strops, honing etc. I've collected and repaired knives for a long time. So I am aware that I know very little about straight razor shaving. I just left the classified section on this site and read familiar words like hollow grind, flat grind and so on.
I'm just looking a inexpensive razor to experiment with. I figure skin type, hair type and other things I can't think of should be considered in choosing a razor. Can someone point me in the direction I need to go? I've read the "beginners" section but still am not sure what I need to experiment. Any help would be appreciated.
LSU - Bama game starts in about 6 hours. It's gonna be a good one. Geaux Tigers!!!

Welcome to the SRP ! My advice would be to buy a shave ready razor from the classifieds . That way , you will have a razor ready to shave with that can also be a bench mark for what a razors edge should be . Then buy a razor to restore , and hone away at it . I've sharpened my knives , and woodworking tools for more than 35 years , and I'm pretty good at it , so believe me when I tell you that honing a razor is a whole different deal . I would suggest a 5/8 or 6/8 hollow ground to start with , and a Norton 4k/8k hone . You my also want a finer than 8k finish hone . Good luck with your new adventure .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .
