Default Mosquito bite-like itchy bumps ....... and razor burn

    Hi,

I've been straight razor shaving for over a year, not saying I'm an expert but I still have a few very bothersome effects. First of all let me say I use a disposable Parker SR-1 with Merkur or Wilkinson's Sword which have worked the best with me. I'm not sure, but I just might have super-ultra sensitive skin, or maybe just when shaving...

Anyways, I popped in a brand new blade today, expecting a super smooth shave although sometimes I know shaves get better after a few uses on the blade. And even on my first, with the grain pass, I got nasty razor burn (red looking) around my jawline and by my sideburns. I use Proraso ultra sensitive shave soap and make a decent lather, even used some preshave oil today... but still had burn.

Furthermore, after the shave, I often get 2-3 large bumps, that are almost like mosquito bites and are really annoying, even though I follow up with Proraso pre/postshave cream with Menthol.

I experimented for a few weeks with a Philips Norelco Sensotouch 3D awhile back. Honestly, the shave (at least on the cheeks), was absolutely amazing, BBS on with and across directions, and barely noticeable in ATG direction. My attitude towards straight razors giving a superior shave has really been shaken. The electric caused no irritation on my cheeks, just on neck when pushing hard to cut like one stray hair on my neck. Any thoughts about these top of the line electrics that are doing a great job?

Any ideas would me much appreciated. Thank you.

I actually just posted about this topic earlier tonight. Though it was regarding DE shaving, the principles remain the same. You can read about it here.

Ryan82 summed up what I was going to say. I had the same problem when I started. learning to use a light hand went a long way for me. I also started adding glycerin to my soap when I make the lather.

I agree with all of the advice above. Another suggestion is to try different blades. Merkur and Wilkinson blades aren't exactly known for being the smoothest or most forgiving blades. Another option would be to graduate to a real straight. If all else fails though, there is no shame in going to a method of shaving that is comfortable for you and gives you the desired results, even if it means usingt an electric.

Ditto to Theseus' comment. I think it's time for you to graduate to a real straight razor. You'll be surprised at the difference it will make. There will be a period of adjustment but with time, patience, and perseverance you will get the shaves you have always wanted. Check the classifieds here and you'll probably find something you like at a reasonable price. Keep us posted and best of luck.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???
