Thanked: 0Got a fromm for Christmas
My parents asked what I wanted for Christmas this year and I told them I was thinking about getting into shaving with a straight razor. I told them where to look for a decent one but instead they get me a fromm from amazon.
Any suggestions on what I should do with this? Will I need to get it honed right out of the box? Is this something I can do myself? Should I even bother with shaving with it and try exchanging it for a strop and brush and buy a razor form the classifieds here?
I have not shaved with it yet and I am excited to get started, but I want to make sure that I make the right decisions.

It's a Solingen blade, which have a good reputation for quality.
You will need to get honed professionally before you try and shave with it - there are plenty of members here who could do that for you - look in the classifieds.
I would stay away from honing until you have been shaving, with consistantly good results, for about 6 - 12 months.
You don't say where you are from, however, I would hazard a guess that there is a member close enough to you that may help with your shaving experience - have a look at the member map and see if this is the case.
Finally, welcome to SRP - hang on and enjoy the rideHang on and enjoy the ride...

Thanked: 0Thanks for the information. I am from Baton Rouge, LA. I will update my profile.
Do you think I could trust a knife sharpening company if I cannot find a member nearby?

Hello there,
Merry Christmas...
Yesterday was the first time that I was able to use the Captain's after a fresh shave and it was very invigorating. My skin had a very nice tingle to it and my wife was still able to smell it, albeit up close, around 4:00 PM. She describes the scent as "Christmas-sy" but I have no problem wearing this year round. Today was a really fine shave and I really don't know what would have made it better, unless I had the skills to achieve the same quality shave using a straight razor. Now that would be something.
Regards,
Andrea

Thanked: 4942In recent years the Fromm has not been high on my recommendation list. It has been a difficult razor to hone and lost it's edge rather quickly in my opinion. The vintage Fromm's were nice razors and my understanding is that the manufacturer has been trying to improve them over the last couple years. I have recently honed a couple and they are getting a little better. Actually, I am testing a few others from this manufacturer hoping for the best.
Have fun.

I have a Fromm that I purchased a couple months ago at a local blade sharpening shop. They honed it up for me. So far, I have had good luck with it.

There is nothing better than receiving something like this from someone you love.It may not be the highest quality razor you will come to own,but I'm sure it will become your favorite
