Thanked: 0GEBR razor. Any good?
When I say that I am just starting out with straight razors, I'm not kidding. I've been looking for some razors to start out with. Some shaze ready (not from the manufacturer shave ready, but from experienced honers shave ready) and some for me to work on myself to get to understand what the whole experience with straight razor shaving is like. I just bought a razor stamped on the tang, "GEBR Geldmacher Solingen," and was wondering if anyone has heard of them and if it is any good. I don't have it in my hand yet and bought it based upon images and description (but not for too much money). This razor falls into the category of not shave ready, but looks like a solid blade. Any help would be appreciated.

ive never heard of it but some of the big guns might have. if it is decent stell i recommend having it sent out to be honed so you know its properly done. then later one down the road you can try honing yourself. but to start out its best to have a pro edge so you have what you need to learn to get a great shave.

Thanked: 0I may have found a little information. I thought that GEBR was the name of the company, but it turns out that it is an abbreviation for the German first name Gebruder and the name and address for the razor manufacturer is actually:
Gebrüder Geldmacher, Solingen, Behringstrasse 37-41 in 1939. Open-blade razor maker.
This is a listing from a German phone book from the time period which I found at this site.
Razor makers
Fairly interesting since it has a pretty deep listing of razor makers from the Solingen area from the early part of the 20th century.
