First straight razor(s) ordered.....might have went a little overboard
Hey guys,
After much debate and a lot of helpful input from our members, I pulled the trigger and placed an order from SRD for a starter kit.
Here is the kit I picked up:
1. SRD Dovo Best 6/8 half hollow
2. SRD 3" Red Latigo Strop
3. World of Straight Shaving DVD
4. Camellia oil
I know its nothing real special but it got me even more fired up to get into straight shaving. So I went back to the forum and found a certain "Which straight did you shave with today?" thread. Saw some pretty outstanding pics on there. Really took a liking to the Thiers Issard blades. Then by chance, I happened to stumble upon a honemeister/vendor from Germany, Rasurpur. After some mental justification along the lines of "it is your 30th birthday", "you worked hard last year to get that tax return" and reading "it's a good idea to have two razors" somewhere on the forum, I caved in and ordered this:
Thiers Issard 7/8 Barber's Notch 1/4 Hollow with Blond Horn scales.
Martin said normal handle time from Deutschland to the US is about 3 weeks. I should get my kit from SRD by Wednesday. That will give me a couple of weeks to practice. I think I might actually try to wait to shave with the TI until I really feel comfortable with Dovo (at least that is what I will tell myself until I see the TI in person). I can't wait to get everything though and shave like a real man!
Cheers,
Ryan

Choke. Nothing like starting well.
Don't sell that Dovo short. I've not found them inspiring, but the worst one took a good edge, gave a very good shave. The avg. one takes an excellent edge. Some are outstanding. Particularly when new, we get waylaid by eye-candy. S'okay. 'Gotta have some fun.
Your first tasks are all about making lather, learning to strop (easier said than done), and mapping out your beard - what direction does it go in which area, and how to stretch and stroke eacy area. You'll do fine. You're certainly starting out w/ great gear. Incredible shaves are in your near future.

No, not overboard at all.
Looks like you got the essentials. Now a brush and some soap and you can start shaving. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Already been wet shaving for a while so I have all that gear already. I am have been getting great shaves with a safety razor and love the process/ritual of it. I really understand the importance of prep before shaving. So it was inevidible I would end up with a few straight razors

Looks like you have several nice straight razor additions to your shaving equipment inventory.
A straight razor set from a vendor, such as SRP, is always a smart move imho. That's how I started.
And the TI? Marvelous!

Thanked: 1936What he said! You are starting out with quality stuff & the dvd will help much more than trying to weed thru all the stuff on youtube. Anything you get from SRD is quality stuff. Every Dovo & TI I have shaved with/honed. The Dovo was honed by THE honemeister, so you know the edge will be right. NOW...it's up to you.
