    Default 1200 grit wet & dry ?

Could you (for example) stick a layer of 1200 grit wet & dry sandpaper on a sheet of glass and use it to hone ?

you can, but you'll need some finer grades to get a nice edge. i use as far as 1micron diamond lapping sheets. they are available at a range of different shops but as an example, workshopheaven sell it.

    best regards

Sorry it's meant to read 12,000 wet & dry. Not 1200

At the lower grits, sandpaper is really aggressive. At the higher grits and with either the sand paper or the films, if you have it nice and tight on the paper, you can definitely hone with the edge leading. Be careful if no tight on the surface though as it is easy to slice through the paper or film. Some people trail the edge at higher levels with the paper and films too, but from a consistency and result stand point, I still like to lead the edge.

    Have fun.
