    Default Help--nicked my razor!!

Good morning all... This morning, I lost concentration for a split second and bumped my razor (the cutting edge, toward the toe) on the edge of my faucet. It put a small, yet somewhat visible dimple into the edge, now, when I ran it across the leather strop, it scrapes up small leather shavings. I had not yet ordered a hone. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you so much,
    Nick

I am sorry, it has happened to me as well. You will need to send it out for honing - check out the member services here or pm some people in your area. You will also want to get a second razor to have on hand for when these things happen or if you need to send one out for honing. You could try wiping off the blade on a sponge as I have seen some do to avoid the faucet. Good luck.

Listen to Coach, it will need to visit the hones. I'm a sink rinser and have done it before...still rinse in the sink though. I think that after you ding an edge once you will pay more attention...I did.

You need to put the City & State of where you are from...this helps people to offer their services. If you live near Paris, TX I would hone out the ding for you and share a cold one or cup of coffee with you.

I am in Erie, PA. Is there anyone relatively close that could hone out the nick? I'd certainly buy the beer, cigars, etc!

Agreed.... STOP! Send it out to a professional and don't try to fix it yourself. We've all been there, done it. After you've learned how to hone, then you might try a repair but I would suggest doing it the easy and sure way; send it out. Good luck!

This reminds me all too well of my first week straight shaving. I did the exact same thing with a brand new razor. Luckily someone offered to hone it up for me, but it still put a big dent in my confidence.

The lesson I pulled away from it was to never point the edge of the razor towards the faucet during any rinsing. For the most part now, I put a damp sponge at the side of the sink for wiping off lather during the shave, and it seems a lot less risky

I agree with tlittle. I do think Willie Wonka has been done, though! I take my hot towel (hand towel size) after use and fold it up 4 times to about 4 inches in width and full length after squeezing out good and lay it on the side of the sink. I can then "strop" the lather/hair off on the soft, damp fabric. Nowhere near something hard to hit and the advantage of seeing what you get with each pass! You also stand less risk of getting water in the pivot. I only rinse when done and the blade only. PM me and I will help you out! You pay postage!

You know what really struck me gentlemen? I was cruising right along, having a great shave in preparation for a really busy day between court, patrol, admin. duties, etc..then...I knick the faucet. I walked out of the bathroom, and my wife says it looked like I just saw a ghost!! It's amazing how this becomes a ritual and a real treat you look forward to everyday, and when you screw it up..it hurts!! My morning just didn't start out well!! My plan is threefold: #1-get the razor fixed, #2-purchase a second razor (I did this today!), and #3-wipe the razor clean on my shaving towel--NO MORE FAUCETS!!

I have done it this way for years, dont get the blade wet and you dont worry about rust, keep it away from the faucet and you dont worry about dings. I bet 10% of the razors I hone for others are for this reason, faucet dings. Be sure to check the classifieds under member services if you cant find someone to help out close to you.
