Default did i just kill my blade?

Hey guys. I'm pretty bummed. I left the bathroom door open and the cat got in while I was shaving. Long story short, I was distracted and I dropped the razor in an empty sink. Looks like a small chip came out of the toe. Other than that maybe some damage I can't see. Can it be saved?

Sorry for the accident. A bummer indeed but IMO cats are worth the trouble.
You can probably hone out the chip, or at least blend it into the edge and it should shave just fine.

pics would help. Look at it in bright light, or with a magnifying glass to see if it is cracked anywhere. Depending on how big the chip is you can follow JeffR's advice. There are some guys here that do pretty good work on making toe damage look like it was never there

you will probably want to rehone it (either do it by yourself or send it out) do you have a picture of the chip so we can see how bad it is and possibly be of more assistance?

either way however, big or small, it probably should be rehoned

Unless the blade is cracked or bent, it should be fixable.

My Lord, I just had a flashback...I went to remove a razor from the cabinet, turned it upside - which, was downside, as I stored it the wrong way - and sat watching horrified as the razor came flying out backwards. Only good thing was that it didn't open on the way down, or the crash on the floor, and stayed closed the whole time, opening barely upon impact. But man, I can relate to the horror.

I don't think we'd ever be able to give you good advice unless we saw a photo. It would depend a lot on how narrow the razor is to start with and how deep the chip is. If you started with a 4/8 and the chip was large, it may not be worth trying to save. On the other hand, if you started with a 7/8 or 6/8 and the chip was small, you could hone it and end up with a 6/8 or 5/8, etc :-)

    Good rule of thumb

If the chip is smaller than or equal to the bevel size then that is Honing

If the chip is larger than the bevel that is Restoration

If there is a crack coming out of the chip that just SUX

Lets see how bad it is cenzo. If it's small enough, I might be able to help.
