First and Foremost! Welcome to the most friendly, helpful and informative site on the web!!!
I do hope that you will find others in your area as it's a great way to share and learn. However there is an alternative!
GSSIXGUN has several videos on line. Here's one of his latest. I've found that Glen's tutorial videos to be top notch! I will confess to being biased as I consider Glen to be a friend and he's done some custom scales and other things for me and my son!
With that said, I hope that this video will help you on a wonderful and rewarding path!

Thanked: 3
Ive been talking to him on the phone several times already on the phone. He is indeed a wealth of knowledge, yet Id like to see the Fingernail and Thumbpad tests upfront and in person. Thanks.

As I've said, I do hope that you will be contacted by fellow straight razor shavers where you live! That's part of the fun!!
With that said, the thumbnail test will be evident when you try it. If the section of the edge simply glides and doesn’t offer any ‘pull’ or other kind of resistance, then it’s not where you want it to be! If the edge doesn’t dig in, you then need to work on the honing and the edge a little more until it does!
Personally, I don’t use the thumb pad test. Once I know that the edge is catching on the thumbnail I’m off and running! I also don’t use the Hanging Hair Test!
Now I’ll tell you quite honestly that I ‘Prefer’ to finish off of a Naniwa 12k. Please Notice that I said ‘Prefer’! However, I could spend the rest of my days shaving with a Norton 8k finish!
If you can’t get a close, comfortable shave off of the Norton 8k then don’t even bother buying higher grit stones!
I sincerely hope that this will help you in your quest!
